Intro to Screenplay Format Workshop
This workshop will teach you to write (in screenplay format)
If you're new to screenwriting and struggling to get past the format and into your scene, this is the place to start. In this workshop, we break down the elements of screenplay format, how to use them to break through writers block and get your idea on the page. This Workshop is available on demand as a replay - watch any time.
This workshop covers all basic elements of screenplay format, as well as detail on how this format informs the entire production.
Through a live writing demo (and with an option for you to practice yourself alongside), you’ll learn how to format:
- Scene headings
- Characters
- Action
- Dialogue
- Parentheticals
- Transitions
- Title pages
- Revisions
We’ll also cover best practices and tips on:
- Introducing a location
- Introducing a character
- Pacing the script
- Bringing perspective to the writing
- Writing for production (directors, artists, actors, executives)
- Dos and Don’ts / pitfalls to avoid along the way
What you need to take this class:
You can participate with zero prior knowledge or experience, but to get the most out of it, I'd like you to come to the workshop with a screenwriting program ready to explore during the class. Check out WriterDuet and Celtx for free trials and inexpensive monthly memberships. I will be using WriterDuet for our example.
What you will walk away with:
After this workshop, you will understand the foundational elements of screenplay format and how to use them. With this knowledge and ability to jump into any screenplay program, you’ll be able to use these tools to help you create your own scenes and find your own style. You will also get a list of resources for further learning, an invite to a large discord community of writers to help you apply these skills and connect with others working on their craft, PLUS a bonus gift at the end.
Who this workshop is for:
Anyone is welcome to join, but this workshop is built for beginners. We will work through the process from the first time you open a project in your screenwriting software in order to introduce and build a deeper understanding of how the format works (and some tricks along the way).
Lecture includes a live writing demo and a Q&A session (about 4 hours total)
